THREE years after the Paria diving tragedy, Cabinet has agreed to pay $1 million in ex gratia compensation to each of the families of the four deceased divers and to the lone survivor, Christopher Boodram.
The four divers who died were Fyzal Kurban, Kazim Ali, Rishi Nagassar and Yusuf Henry. The Government is making the $5 million payout without admission of liability, Prime Minister Stuart Young said yesterday as he made the announcement at a post-Cabinet news conference at Whitehall, Port of Spain.
Young said there was no level of financial compensation that can compensate for the loss of life in those circumstances, adding “it will never be enough to compensate them for the pain and the tragic circumstances”.
