A young woman who has been a prominent figure at recent public demonstrations was arrested by police during a peaceful Labour Day march in Fyzabad on Friday, drawing concern from labour leaders and activists.
Alyssa Phillip was detained by police officers around midday as participants took part in the annual Labour Day observance. The circumstances surrounding her arrest were not immediately clear.
Phillip has been actively involved in protests following the death of Joshua Samaroo and the subsequent arrest and court appearance of Kaia Sealey who has been charged in connection with his death. Phillip has been at the forefront of several public demonstrations and vigils calling for justice and transparency in the matter.
