Contractor discipline needed as Local Govt Ministry reviews market, GT projects

Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand has called for greater discipline among contractors as the Ministry reviews ongoing projects and works to ensure they are completed on schedule and to the required standard. Manickchand made the call during a meeting on Monday with Permanent Secretary (PS) Miguel Choo-Kang, heads of departments and other key personnel to review projects and priorities under the Ministry’s portfolio. Particular attention was paid to the Ministry’s ongoing market development programme, with the Minister stressing the need for closer monitoring throughout the various stages of projects so that challenges can be identified early and addressed before they affect timelines. She said the Ministry must continue to develop a culture of timely project delivery, while maintaining the required standards. She also acknowledged the work of departmental heads and their teams, noting that successful implementation depends on consistent oversight and coordination across the Ministry. The meeting also examined plans for the continued transformation of Georgetown, including proposed interventions in the Stabroek Market area and work being advanced in collaboration with the King’s Foundation. Among the initiatives discussed was the proposed transformation of Thomas Street Avenue, between Lamaha Street and Church Street, under the wider Healthy Streets project.

The project was designed by the King’s Foundation and is intended to improve the avenue and create a more functional public space. Manickchand encouraged residents and other stakeholders to become involved as the project progresses. The Ministry is also pursuing a number of initiatives aimed at improving the appearance and functionality of Georgetown, including garbage collection, public washroom facilities and other interventions targeting public spaces. Manickchand said close monitoring, accountability and collaboration would remain central to the Ministry’s approach as it advances projects aimed at improving communities across Guyana.
