Tarouba gears up for 10-night Ramleela

LIKE many communities in Trinidad and Tobago, the Tarouba Ramleela and Phagwa Committee is preparing to host its ten-night Ramleela celebration, depicting the story of Lord Rama and his triumph over the wicked king, Ravana.

But before the ‘gods’ take to the stage being prepared at the Tarouba Recreation Ground, members of the committee participated in a religious procession through the village on Saturday.

The procession, according to committee member and villager Shane Samlal, was held in memory of village elders, children of East Indian indentured immigrants who started the theatrical production decades ago to preserve their cultural identity and strengthen community bonds.
