Group targeting 63 Beach for major cleanup on Saturday

(Kaieteur News) – The Caribbean Youth Environment Network-Guyana Chapter (CYEN-Guyana) is inviting volunteers, organisations, businesses, and community members to join the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC 2026) project, taking place on Saturday at #63 Beach, Corentyne, Berbice.

The cleanup will bring together volunteers to remove marine litter from the coastline while collecting valuable information on the types and quantities of waste affecting Guyana’s coastal marine environment. In a press release, CYEN-Guyana said the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) was launched in 1986 by Ocean Conservancy, beginning with a cleanup along the coast of Texas in the United States. What started as a local effort has since grown into a global movement, mobilising millions of volunteers to clean beaches, waterways and coastal areas around the world.

ICC volunteers do more than simply remove litter. Participants also identify and record the types of waste collected, contributing information that helps us better understand marine debris and its sources. Over the years, these efforts have helped to increase awareness on marine pollution and supported action to prevent waste from reaching waterways and the ocean. In Guyana, CYEN-Cuyana serves as one of the country’s coordinators for International Coastal Cleanup, helping to mobilise volunteers, organisations and communities to participate in this global effort. CYEN-Guyana empowers young people across the country by facilitating their personal development and full involvement in all matters about the environment and sustainable development.
