Independent Senator Courtney Mc Nish criticised government for giving senators only hours to review extensive amendments to the Virtual Assets and Virtual Assets Service Providers Bill, 2025 before the November 26 debate.
In his opening remarks, during debate in the Senate, Mc Nish questioned how legislators were expected to properly examine what he described the voluminous set of amendments to a bill that plays a key role in TT’s efforts to meet Financial Action Task Force (FATF) requirements and avoid derisking from the global banking system.
“Forty-eight pages of amendments reached my office about 12 hours before this sitting. Absolutely no way any normal, regular person could have therefore paid any true, meaningful attention to this marked up bill,” Mc Nish complained.
