CRIME WATCH host Ian Alleyne has been cleared of civil liability in a lawsuit arising out of the arrest of a Chaguanas mechanic who appeared on his television programme nearly seven years ago.
In a judgment delivered yesterday, High Court judge Justice Westmin James dismissed claims of wrongful arrest and false imprisonment brought against Alleyne by Daniel Ramnath. However, the court found that Ramnath’s constitutional rights were breached by the police following his arrest and ordered the State to pay more than $250,000 in damages.
Ramnath’s lawsuit stemmed from events surrounding his appearance on Alleyne’s programme on September 19, 2018. According to Ramnath, he attended the studio in Chaguanas voluntarily to air a grievance about a customer who allegedly owed him money.
