Pope Leo XIV remembers Gaza’s suffering in first Christmas homily and calls for peace

Pope Leo XIV durÂing his first ChristÂmas Day homiÂly on ThursÂday reÂmemÂbered the peoÂple of Gaza “exÂposed for weeks to rain, wind and cold” and said the world’s many conÂflicts can onÂly be siÂlenced through diÂaÂlogue.
Leo led the ChristÂmas Day Mass from the cenÂtral alÂtar beÂneath the balustrade of St. PeÂter’s BasilÂiÂca, adorned with floÂral garÂlands and clusÂters of red poinÂsetÂtias. White flowÂers were set at the feet of a statÂue of Mary, mothÂer of JeÂsus, whose birth is celÂeÂbratÂed on ChristÂmas Day.
ReÂcallÂing that God was made flesh through JeÂsus’s birth in a manger in BethÂleÂhem, Leo likened God’s word to “a fragÂile tent among us.”
