Defence seeks stay of murder charges in MV Barima sinking, cites abuse of process

(Kaieteur News) – Attorneys representing two of the three crew members charged with murder in the catastrophic sinking of the MV Barima submitted formal written arguments to the Charity Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 28, 2026, calling for an immediate stay of criminal proceedings on the grounds of an abuse of process.

The defence submission for the accused, Kevin Price and Delon Granderson in the matter of the State v Kevin Price and others, was presented to Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir by a defence team led by Dr. Dexter Todd. Prosecutor Mandel Moore has been given until October 12, 2026, to file the state’s response, with Magistrate Mohabir scheduled to deliver his ruling on October 19.

In the interim, all three crew members, Kevin Price, Delon Granderson, and Chief Mate Rondell Dwayne Roberts, were further remanded to prison.
