Corporate Secretary of the Fishermen and Friends of the Sea (FFOS) Gary Aboud says the group is calling for a referendum to be held to decide the country’s alignments as geopolitical tensions surge between the US and Venezuela.
The call comes as a result of a bitter back and forth between the government and Venezuelan officials in the aftermath of a lethal strike carried out by the US military on an alleged drug carrying vessel purportedly bound for Trinidad and Tobago.
Last week Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar praised US actions as the vessel was struck in the southern Caribbean killing 11 men that the US alleged were part of Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and called for US forces to ‘kill them all violently.’
