The Government envisions the historic Carrera Prison Island as a five-star resort, the Port of Spain Prison as an exhibition hall, and the land where Golden Grove Prison sits as a housing development.
These are the plans shared by Minister of Works and Infrastructure Jearlean John as part of the government's "Revitalisation Blueprint", which was launched on November 6. The plans were presented to private sector representatives and diplomats at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann's, in a bid to get both local and foreign investment into the government's vision for the country.
The plans for the prisons arose out of an overarching vision of consolidating all prisoners and some justice facilities into a 500-acre Tamana Prison Campus to house 6,000 inmates. It's a move she said would save the State $60 million annually.
