After 268 years in existence, the Port of Spain Prison is to be finally shuttered.
“The prison was built in 1757 at a time when it was referred to as a holding pen. It was long before the light bulb was even invented (in 1802).
“Today, 268 years later, the United National Congress Government, led by the Honourable Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has taken the historic decision to decommission the Port of Spain Prison,” Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander said yesterday.
