After 268 years in existence, the Port of Spain Prison is to be finally shuttered.

“The prison was built in 1757 at a time when it was referred to as a hol­ding pen. It was long before the light bulb was even invented (in 1802).

“Today, 268 years later, the Uni­ted National Congress Government, led by the Honourable Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has taken the historic decision to decommission the Port of Spain Prison,” Minister of Homeland Secu­rity Roger Alexander said yesterday.
