Duncan: Wales’ 57MW test is not delivery of promised 300MW

(Kaieteur News) – The 57 megawatts (MW) expected to be added to the national grid following testing of the first turbine at the Wales Gas-to-Energy project in December does not represent delivery of the 300MW promised to Guyanese, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament Sherod Duncan said on Friday.

Addressing the media on Guyana’s electricity crisis, Duncan called on the Government to publish separate, credible timelines for turbine testing, tariff reductions and the delivery of dependable electricity.

He also urged the administration to put the prolonged delay in completing the Gas-to-Energy project into context. Duncan recalled that in the 2022 National Budget, the Government said construction of the project would begin in the third quarter of 2022 and be completed in 2024. He further pointed to a January 2022 statement by Prime Minister Mark Phillips that the Gas-to-Energy project and Amaila Falls Hydropower Project would together provide 415MW to satisfy Guyana Power and Light’s (GPL) projected base-load demand over the following five years.
