Archbishop Barbara Gray-Burke has taken issue with Prime Minister Stuart Young’s proposal to remove the term “Shouter Baptist”, saying that she is willing to take the matter as far as the Privy Council to protect it.
“He is an individual and he is free to make any statements he will like to make. The same way I am free to disagree with it, and take it to court, and go as far as the Privy Council if need be. Because I will not see that removed. Shouter represents the legacy of resilience following the repeal of the Shouters Prohibition Ordinance. It is part of our history. It makes up our struggles. So personally, I was terribly hurt to hear Mr Young talking in that manner. He says he was born in Belmont and grow up in this country, so he must know about our history. So one must assume he knows how important that word is to us,” Gray-Burke said. *
Gray-Burke made the comments in response to recent remarks by Prime Minister Stuart Young, who suggested removing the word ‘Shouter’ from the name of the Spiritual Shouter Baptist holiday.
