Today marks 100 days since Allister Guevarro took office as Commissioner of Police on June 18, taking charge of a Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) grappling with murders, kidnappings, and gang warfare.
One hundred days later, official police figures show declines in violent crime. But the period has also been marked by a state of emergency (SoE), deadly police encounters, and high-profile kidnappings and murders.
According to TTPS statistics, as of yesterday, the country had recorded 269 murders, compared to more than 467 up to the same period in 2024—a difference of more than 198 killings. But the decline also came in a year that has had two SoEs.
