Take shorter showers - GWI urges

(Kaieteur News) – Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) issued a public advisory on Wednesday, warning citizens of ongoing dry weather conditions caused by the El Niño phenomenon and calling for immediate household water conservation efforts across the country.

The national water utility posted a public awareness notice across its official social media channels under the national campaign hashtag #EveryDropMattersGY, urging residents to adopt daily habits to prevent unnecessary wastage and protect the country’s freshwater resources.

In its caption, GWI emphasised that “El Niño is here, and every drop counts!” To help consumers manage their daily consumption during the dry spell, the utility company outlined five essential practices for households to implement immediately. Residents are urged to repair leaking taps and pipes right away, as even small drips waste significant volumes of water over time. Additionally, consumers should take shorter showers, turn off running taps while brushing teeth or completing household tasks, and only run washing machines with full loads to maximise efficiency per cycle. Outdoor cleaning activities should also be adjusted by using a bucket instead of a continuous running hose whenever practical.
