The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre says preliminary findings indicate that ground deformation recorded at Galfa Point/L’Envieuse on June 27th was triggered by the powerful magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24th.
A team of UWI Seismic Research Centre scientists visited the site to conduct field investigations and collect data following reports of ground movement in the area.
According to the Seismic Research Centre, the event bears similarities to the ground deformation observed at Los Iros after the magnitude 6.9 earthquake in 2018. Researchers say both incidents are linked to the seismic characteristics and geological conditions of their respective locations.
