Government Moves To Raise Age Limits For Alcohol, Tobacco And Cannabis

The minimum legal age for the consumption of alcohol and tobacco could soon rise from 18 to 21 years, and for gambling and the consumption of cannabis, the age limit could increase even further, from 18 to 25.

This was announced just after 5pm on Monday by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar via a post on X, saying the proposed legislation is part of the Government’s commitment to protecting young people.

The proposed cannabis age limit of 25 however, represents a tougher age restriction than that announced by Mrs Persad-Bissessar in January, when she said the legal age would be raised from 18 to 21.
