The Auditor General’s Department has written to the Parliament correcting “misinformation” that the Government reimbursed the office of the Auditor General $2 million for legal fees incurred as a result of the lawsuit filed by Auditor General Jaiwantie Ramdass against the former minister of Finance Colm Imbert.
At Monday’s Standing Finance Committee meeting Port of Spain North/St Ann’s West MP Stuart Young had raised questions about this, noting that the SFC documentation referred to $2 million in fees paid to the Auditor General stemming from a judgement in favour of the Auditor General as per the Privy Council appeal in the matter of the Auditor General versus the then-minister of finance, an explanation which was confirmed by the Minister of Finance Davendranath Tancoo in response to Young’s questions.
Young insisted then that it was improper and unusual to reimburse the Auditor General in this way and that any payment should be made through the Office of the Attorney General.
