Idle oil refinery in Trinidad may not be best option for Guyana

(Kaieteur News) – Guyana is determined to refine its crude oil being generated offshore as part of its strategy to achieve energy security, but utilising nearby existing infrastructure such as the idle facility in Trinidad and Tobago may not be the best option for the country.

This is the view of energy expert, Marta Jara, a non-resident Fellow of the Institute of the Americas and former President of Uruguay’s National Oil Company (ANCAP) and Shell Executive. Jara is a chemical engineer and currently heads Ventus Hidrigeno, a multi-Latin company pioneering the development of green hydrogen for heavy transport.

In an invited comment, Jara explained that oil producers have historically entered into long-term supply contracts with refiners. She referenced Venezuela’s ownership of CITGO and Mexico’s former partnership with Shell in the Deer Park refinery as prominent examples of upstream producers participating in refining systems.
