(Kaieteur News) – The elections in Brazil have turned out to be more than electing a government. The first round, concluded on Sunday, has effectively signalled the end of an era and the changing of an age in the region.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, at age eighty, finished second to Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of Jair Bolsonaro, the president whom Lula succeeded in 2023. The margin was narrow—47.03 percent to 45.16 percent but history is often written by margins that appear insignificant on election night and ominous in retrospect. Brazil’s electoral authority has confirmed the result, with the two top candidates now proceeding to the October 25 runoff.
