(Kaieteur News) – The Taiwan question bears on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and is at the very core of China’s core interests. The position of the Chinese government and the Chinese people on the Taiwan question has been consistent and clear. Resolutely safeguarding China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is the firm will of more than 1.4 billion Chinese people. Achieving China’s complete reunification is the shared aspiration and sacred duty of all Chinese people.
In recent years, some international media outlets, in their reporting on the Taiwan question, have at times portrayed “China” and “Taiwan” as two separate and equal political entities. They have used erroneous expressions such as “China-Taiwan relations” and “tensions between China and Taiwan,” and have even wrongly referred to Taiwan as a “country.” Such descriptions disregard the historical context, legal facts and international consensus, violate the one-China principle, and convey to the public the false impression of “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.”
There is but one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. These are indisputable facts supported by history and the law. The one-China principle has become a basic norm governing international relations and a prevailing consensus in the international community.
