Carite and king fish, two favourites for the Lenten season, are scarce.
So said Carenage Heritage Fish Stall spokesperson Desmond Ryan in an interview with the Express yesterday. Both types of fish, which are usually served with ground provisions and rice, can cost $35 to $40 per pound.
It was a common sentiment echoed among several fishmongers who were busy scaling and gutting red fish and a massive grouper, probably weighing 200 pounds, at the stall yesterday. The fishmongers also complained vehemently about the “slow sales” during the countdown to Easter. Casting his eye in the direction of the sea, Ryan said: “No sales. No fish. You can’t get king fish or carite. Right now, the evil men in the world are causing the fish to not spawn. They are interfering with the oceans. Then there’s the challenge of climate change.”
