New vending arrangements for Woolford Avenue vendors

Local Government and Regional Development Minister, Priya Manickchand on Monday met with vendors operating along Woolford Avenue, Georgetown to discuss arrangements for vending following infrastructure upgrades in the area. The meeting, which was also attended by Permanent Secretary (PS) Miguel Choo-Kang, focused on concerns raised by vendors who were removed by the recent works and possible ways to reorganise vending along the corridor. Woolford Avenue recently underwent the first phase of upgrades, including an expanded roadway and improved drainage. Manickchand told the vendors that removing them was not the objective of the infrastructure project. Instead, she said the Ministry is seeking to restructure vending arrangements to accommodate persons who depend on the activity for their livelihoods while ensuring that vending does not undermine the improvements made to the area. During the engagement, vendors raised their concerns and offered recommendations on how vending could be accommodated. Discussions included the possibility of introducing more organised and standardised vending structures that would fit within the upgraded surroundings. The meeting also examined the relationship between roadside vendors and canteens operating at nearby schools, as well as challenges vendors face in obtaining the necessary approvals to operate. The Ministry said further consultations will be held with vendors, canteen operators and head teachers to develop an arrangement that takes into account the interests of all parties while maintaining safety and order along Woolford Avenue. Manickchand reaffirmed the Ministry’s position that development should improve public spaces while also creating opportunities for people who live and earn in the communities being upgraded. The Ministry said it will continue working with communities and other stakeholders to advance development projects while addressing concerns affecting livelihoods.
