Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles has criticised the Prime Minister’s position on school violence, arguing that the government’s emphasis on expulsion reflects a “disconnect from reality” and fails to address the underlying challenges facing many students.
Her comments follow remarks on Thursday by Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar, who said incidents of misconduct in schools have increased and argued that stronger disciplinary measures are needed.
The Prime Minister said students involved in serious misbehaviour should face expulsion and suggested some parents must take greater responsibility for their children’s conduct. She also indicated that the government is considering legislation that would hold parents legally and financially accountable for children involved in bullying or violent incidents at school
