Oil expansion set to drive demand for more workers, new careers – Finance Minister

…as over 1500 job seekers turn out for GYSBI recruitment fair

Over 1500 Guyanese turned out at the Everest Cricket Club on Sunday for a recruitment fair hosted by Guyana Shore Base Inc (GYSBI), in collaboration with Muneshwers Limited and its joint venture partners. Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance and Public Service, Dr Ashni Singh, who attended the event, said the initiative demonstrated the opportunities being created through local participation in Guyana’s expanding economy. Singh said the Muneshwers-GYSBI collaboration had created more than 720 jobs, with Guyanese nationals accounting for 98 per cent of its workforce. He described the partnership as an example of local content in practice and encouraged other companies to pursue similar initiatives to connect Guyanese with employment opportunities.

Guyana’s oil production is currently exceeding 900,000 barrels per day. According to recent Government figures, average crude production reached approximately 902,000 barrels per day during the first half of 2026, while the country is expected to surpass one million barrels per day with the commencement of production from its fifth floating production, storage and offloading vessel later this year. Singh said the continued expansion of the petroleum sector and wider economy would result in increased demand for workers and new career opportunities. He urged companies across different sectors to organise similar recruitment initiatives outside Georgetown and Region Four so that Guyanese in other parts of the country can access emerging opportunities. The Senior Minister also encouraged job seekers to remain proactive, develop skills aligned with the changing economy and submit their curricula vitae to recruitment databases to position themselves for current and future vacancies. The event was also used to highlight the importance of skills development as Guyana’s labour market expands. The 2026 Mid-Year Report has identified the availability and composition of skills as an increasing challenge as economic activity grows.
