(Kaieteur News) – The main opposition party, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) has formally invited A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) to a meeting on Monday, 24th August, 2026. The meeting aims to address disagreements over representation on the Local Government Commission (LGC), appointments to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), and the Chairman and Vice Chairman RDC positions in Region 10.
The call for dialogue follows a public statement from APNU Leader Aubrey Norton expressing strong disappointment over WIN’s submission of nominees for the LGC. In a letter addressed to WIN Leader and Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed, Norton criticised the submission of three names Leola Narine and Leslyn Lowe of WIN, alongside Nicholas Chesney of the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) to President Irfaan Ali without prior notification to APNU.
Norton argued that despite APNU submitting its own recommendations Joan Ann Ramacindo and Ronald Daniels upon WIN’s request, its nominees were completely excluded. Pointing to APNU’s 12 seats in the National Assembly compared to WIN’s 16 and FGM’s single seat, Norton stated that fairness and political proportionality demand APNU hold at least one seat on the Commission, warning that such exclusion signals a fractured opposition.
