Police are investigating reports of individuals allegedly defrauded by men posing as Housing and Development Corporation (HDC) officials.
In one case, a woman from Morvant reported that on January 25, she was contacted by a man claiming to be employed by HDC. The man told her that her name was listed for an HDC unit and requested a total of $17,000 for legal fees and a down payment. Between January 26 and 27, She made three payments to the account provided, totaling $14,700. Since then, the man has failed to deliver on his promises regarding the unit.
In a separate incident, a 44-year-old woman from Embacadere, San Fernando, reported that she deposited $12,000 at First Citizens Bank, Independence Square, on instructions from a man she met on Facebook who identified himself as an “HDC Coordinator.” The woman was told to visit a property at Corinth for a site inspection, but no one was present at the location. Subsequent attempts to contact the alleged coordinator were unsuccessful.
