Pope FranĀcis was hosĀpiĀtalĀized FriĀday to treat a weekĀlong bout of bronĀchiĀtis and unĀderĀgo diĀagĀnosĀtic tests, the VatĀiĀcan said, conĀfirmĀingĀ the latĀest isĀsues with the 88-year-oldās ponĀtiffās healthĀ that forced him to canĀcel his agenĀda through MonĀday at least.
FranĀcis has comĀplained of breathĀing trouĀble and was diĀagĀnosed with bronĀchiĀtis Feb. 6, but had conĀtinĀued to hold daiĀly auĀdiĀences in his VatĀiĀcan hoĀtel suite. He atĀtendĀed his genĀerĀal auĀdiĀence WednesĀday and presided at an outĀdoor Mass on SunĀday. But he had handĀed off his speechĀes for an aide to read aloud, sayĀing he was havĀing trouĀble breathĀing.
On FriĀday, he apĀpeared bloatĀed and pale durĀing the handĀful of auĀdiĀences he held beĀfore goĀing to the hosĀpiĀtal. The bloatĀing apĀpeared to inĀdiĀcate that the medĀicaĀtion he was takĀing to treat the lung inĀfecĀtion was makĀing him reĀtain waĀter.
