GGMC puts out ad begging for donations of used clothes, shoes for residents in gold rich communities

(Kaieteur News) – The Irfaan Ali administration has come under criticism after Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) announced a “gently used clothing and footwear” drive to be donated to families in need particularly those that live in mineral-rich regions where about 15 foreign companies are gearing up to extract the country’s mineral wealth.

In fact, businessman and Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall has sharply criticised the move drawing the nexus of the country’s economic status that government often spotlights and a state-agency resorting to used clothes drive to support vulnerable families.

During a recent radio programme, Lall criticised the initiative, arguing that the need for used clothing in communities located in Guyana’s mineral-rich interior raises questions about how much of the wealth generated from the country’s resources is benefitting those communities.
