Prostate cancer now leading cancer among Guyanese men

(Kaieteur News) – Prostate cancer has emerged as the leading cancer diagnosed among Guyanese men, with Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony, warning that too many men are waiting until the disease is advanced before seeking medical attention.

Anthony made the disclosure earlier this week at a symposium for pharmacists, where he urged men to take cancer screening seriously and seek testing early. “Of all the cancers diagnosed, prostate cancer accounts for 31 percent of those cases,” the Minister said, noting that breast cancer had previously ranked higher overall, while prostate cancer has now moved into first place among men.

He attributed the high number of late diagnoses in part to men failing to seek medical attention early. “You don’t come, and when you come it’s too late,” Anthony said.
