‘40,000 NIS pensioners still stuck in the line’

(Kaieteur News) – More than 40,000 National Insurance Scheme (NIS) pensioners are still collecting their pensions manually, despite Government’s push to have payments made directly into bank accounts, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 57th Anniversary of the NIS, Singh said the number of pensioners receiving their payments directly into bank accounts has increased from just over 11,000 in 2020 to more than 20,000 today. He applauded those who have made the switch but urged the remaining pensioners to follow suit.

“But I want to say, there are out there more than 40,000 pensioners who have not made this decision. You could be saving yourself the financial cost and the inconvenience associated with physically going to collect a pension book and associated with physically going to encash a pension voucher, by taking the simple step of getting your pension paid into your bank account,” Singh said.
