NIS Turns 57 as Govt Moves to End Pension Lines Through Digitisation

The National Insurance Scheme (NIS) is moving toward a more fully digital system, with the government urging thousands of pensioners still collecting their benefits through traditional methods to switch to direct bank payments.
At the NISโs 57th anniversary observance on September 16, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, said more than 20,000 pensioners are now receiving their pensions directly into bank accounts, compared with just over 11,000 in 2020.
However, Singh said more than 40,000 pensioners have yet to make the transition.
