Op­po­si­tion Leader Pen­ne­lope Beck­les has ac­cused Gov­ern­ment of abus­ing its emer­gency pow­ers, fol­low­ing the re­vo­ca­tion of the Pre­ven­tive De­ten­tion Or­ders (PDOs) is­sued against busi­ness­man Do­minic and his wife Genevieve, ar­gu­ing that the de­vel­op­ment rais­es se­ri­ous ques­tions about the ba­sis for their de­ten­tions.

The Hadeeds were re­leased from cus­tody on Thurs­day af­ter Min­is­ter of Home­land Se­cu­ri­ty re­voked their PDOs, af­ter what he de­scribed as a com­pre­hen­sive re­view of the le­gal, med­ical and pub­lic in­ter­est is­sues sur­round­ing the case, in­clud­ing rec­om­men­da­tions from the Con­sti­tu­tion Re­view Tri­bunal and on­go­ing as­sess­ments un­der the 2026 Emer­gency Pow­ers Reg­u­la­tions. De­spite lift­ing the PDOs, the min­istry said the crim­i­nal in­ves­ti­ga­tion in­to the al­leged plot to as­sas­si­nate Prime Min­is­ter Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar and oth­er se­nior Gov­ern­ment of­fi­cials re­mains ac­tive by the T&T Po­lice Ser­vice, which is in­ves­ti­gat­ing the mat­ter along­side in­ter­na­tion­al law en­force­ment agen­cies.

Ad­dress­ing sup­port­ers at a Peo­ple’s Na­tion­al Move­ment meet­ing at Bal­isi­er House, Port-of-Spain, on Thurs­day night, Beck­les ques­tioned the al­le­ga­tions that led to the Hadeeds’ de­ten­tion un­der the State of Emer­gency (SoE).
