(Kaieteur News) – Amerindian Heritage Month has arrived once again, bringing with it the familiar procession of ceremonies, colourful cultural displays, official speeches and political declarations about the importance of Guyana’s First Peoples.
The speeches will come. They always do. Government officials will speak eloquently about Amerindian resilience, culture, contribution and the indispensable role of Indigenous peoples in Guyana’s development. Opposition politicians will not want to be outdone. There will be references to empowerment, inclusion, prosperity and the enormous opportunities supposedly waiting for Amerindian communities in oil-rich Guyana.
