A woman has died after the car she was driving plunged into the South Oropouche River in Debe late Monday night.
The vehicle, a silver Toyota Axio, crashed through the railings of a narrow bridge at Bunsee Debe Trace shortly before midnight and submerged in the river, which was swollen due to recent heavy rainfall.
A nearby resident who heard the crash alerted neighbours, and several people rushed to the scene in an attempt to rescue the woman. They tried to access the submerged car in the dark, tea-coloured water, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
