AFTER spending nearly 19 years on remand, a Point Fortin man has been freed of charges arising from the 2007 killing of his stepfather.
A 12-member jury in the Port of Spain High Court on Monday found Trevor Huggins not guilty of both murder and manslaughter in the death of Brian O’Shaughnessy, which took place at their family home in January 2007. The verdict was delivered before Justice Maria Busby Earle-Caddle who presided over the month-long trial.
According to evidence presented by the State, Huggins’ sister told police that on the day of the killing, she was at home with O’Shaughnessy when she heard him shout from the kitchen. She said she found him bleeding from the neck and tried to pull him toward the front door to get help, but he collapsed and died.
