(Kaieteur News) – Guyana is among just 30 countries globally that have provided quantified restoration commitments in their national targets and National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), according to the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) State of the World’s Forests 2026 report.
The report, which examines global efforts to restore degraded forests and landscapes, lists Guyana alongside countries including Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Panama, South Africa and the United Kingdom as countries that provided an absolute figure for restoration in their national biodiversity plans.
The FAO report said although additional countries had provided restoration commitments, only 30 supplied an absolute number in their national targets and NBSAPs. The commitments form part of a broader global push to restore degraded forests and landscapes amid growing concerns over deforestation, land degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change.
