The driver of the truck that veered off the road into a yard in Five Rivers, Arouca, killing eight-year-old Gideon Smart, has apologised to the child’s relatives.
Gideon’s stepfather said yesterday the driver acknowledged seeing children in the yard at Savannah Road Extension moments before the crash.
Martin Gardner told the Express he briefly spoke with the injured and shaken truck driver after Monday’s collision, during which the man expressed remorse and said he had seen children (Gideon and his 11-year-old brother) before losing control of the vehicle.
