Former Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) and West Indies under-19 allrounder Javon Searles has been provisionally suspended from all forms of cricket with immediate effect.
Searles' suspension was announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on March 12 and comes as a result of various breaches of the ICC's and Cricket West Indies' (CWI) anti-corruption codes. Searles faces charges in relation to his participation in the 2023/24 Bim10 Tournament in Barbados, which falls under the jurisdiction of the CWI anti-corruption code. Searles isn't the only one in hot water, as Titans team owner Chitranjan Rathod and team official Trevon Griffith, another former Windies under-19 player, have also been provisionally suspended by the ICC.
The trio has been charged with the following offences:
Breach of Article 2.1.1 of the CWI Code - Fixing, contriving to fix or otherwise influencing improperly, or being party to an agreement or effort to fix or contrive in any way or otherwise influence improperly, the result, progress, conduct or other aspect of matches in the Bim10 tournament in 2023/24 (or attempting to do so).
Breach of Article 2.1.4 of the CWI Code - Soliciting, instructing, encouraging or facilitating players and/or player support personnel to commit offences under the CWI Code.
Breach of Article 2.4.4 of the CWI Code - Failing or refusing to cooperate with a reasonable investigation carried out by the designated anti-corruption official (or his/her designee) in relation to possible offences under the CWI Code.
Both Griffith and Searles were charged with a breach of Article 2.4.2 of the CWI Code, which speaks to their failure to disclose any details of approaches to engage in conduct that would amount to a breach of the CWI Code.
In addition, for breaching Article 2.4.7 of the ICC Code, Griffith has been charged with obstructing the Anti-Corruption Unit's investigation into possible corrupt conduct by concealing and/or tampering with information that may have been relevant to the investigation.
The trio has been suspended with immediate effect and has 14 days from March 11, 2026, to respond to the charges. The ICC release said the charges against Griffith, Rathod and Searles are the continuation of a wider investigation, which also saw US batsman Aaron Jones being charged for five breaches of the CWI and ICC anti-corruption codes in January.
Though he didn't make it to the Windies senior team, the 39-year-old Searles rubbed shoulders with players such as Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, and Kemar Roach for the regional team at the 2006 Under-19 World Cup. Searles also had some memorable years with the TKR franchise in the Caribbean Premier League, playing over 40 matches across six seasons. Searles had figures of two for 29 in the 2017 CPL final to help TKR to the title.
Searles also featured for the Kolkata Knight Riders for four matches in the 2018 Indian Premier League season.
