Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says young people should not view the 2027 implementation of legislation raising the legal ages for alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and gambling as a “free pass” to indulge in those activities for the remainder of this year.
She said yesterday the intervening months will be used by the Government and relevant authorities to put the necessary systems in place to ensure the legislation can be properly enforced when it takes effect.
The Miscellaneous Provisions (Alcohol, Cannabis, Dangerous Drugs, Gambling and Tobacco) Bill, 2026 cleared its final parliamentary hurdle early yesterday when it was passed in the Senate with 15 votes in favour, 12 against and three abstentions.
