Netball Jamaica president Karen Baugh believes they have selected a balanced squad of experience and youth for the Commonwealth Games and expects the team to be challenging for the gold medal.Netball Jamaica revealed a 12-member squad with highly experienced players such as Romelda Aiken-George, Shanice Beckford, Kadie Ann Dehaney, and Shamera Sterling-Humphrey, alongside young players such as Jodi Ann Ward, Crystal Plummer, and Azara Wilmot.Baugh admitted that the selection process was a difficult one but that they believed they have it right for this tournament.“The selection process was quite challenging, but we feel that we have selected a very strong team. We are happy for the senior team members who are represented here as well as some new talent, and it is really what it’s all about. A tournament like Commonwealth should be about exposing new talent,” she said.At the last games, Jamaica produced a superb display to earn the silver medal, and Baugh said they have a podium finish in mind and are hoping they can go one better.“We are expecting the team to do well. We expect to be right up there with the top teams in the world. “We got a silver medal at the last Commonwealth Games. So that’s in the back if our minds – a podium finish, preferably at the very top for the first time.“But we are going to be out there working hard for the team to gel and to put it all out on the court when the time comes,” she added.The team will be coached by Sasha Gaye Henry George and captained by Sterling-Humphrey.The Commonwealth Games netball competition, which features the world’s 12 best teams, takes place from July 25 to August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland.To boot, the Sunshine Girls also added Kendel to the list of companies supporting the team’s participation.Kendel joins Supremer Ventures Foundation, which recently announced a $3.5-million sponsorship to help with expenses for a camp in Durham, England. livingston.scott@gleanerjm.com
