EAST RUTHERFORD, United States (AFP)—Ecuador beat Germany 2-1 on Thursday to reach the World Cup knockout phase for the second time, while Ivory Coast saw off Curacao 2-0 to progress from the group stage for the first time.
Sebastian Beccacece’s Ecuador fought back against Germany after conceding in the second minute at MetLife Stadium with goals from Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata, while a Nicolas Pepe double saw the Ivorians past Curacao in Philadelphia as they finished second behind the Germans in Group E.
