PoS Prison set to close its gates for good

After 268 years as a fixture of Trinidad and Tobago’s penal system, the historic Port of Spain Prison on Frederick Street is finally being consigned to history, with the Government now moving to decommission the ageing facility and permanently close its gates.

The shutdown marks the end of one of the country’s longest chapters in penal history, with the transfer of inmates already under way and expected to be completed by the end of November.

Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander confirmed the move in an interview with the Sunday Express yesterday, saying the transfer of inmates began on September 21 and is expected to be completed by the end of November.
