Jeromie Joseph offered to help put up caution tape at a roadworks site near his home in Tableland on Tuesday afternoon, but construction worker Richard Felmin told him to stay back and he would do it himself.
Moments later, Joseph watched as a steel shoring sheet fell on Felmin after a hydraulic line on an excavator failed.
Felmin, 54, of Rio Claro, died while being taken to the hospital.
