‘Silent’ fireworks promise falls short in San Fernando

Despite the promise of “silent fireworks” to celebrate the nation’s 64th year of Independence on Monday night, residents of the nation’s southern city were still awakened by the explosive sounds of a 10-minute display from atop the San Fernando Hill that some say left people and animals traumatised.

In the lead up to celebrations, government officials reportedly indicated that firework displays at both Port of Spain and San Fernando would make use of “silent” pyrotechnics and fireworks with the aim of reducing the loud bangs and the potential impact on nearby communities.

In Port of Spain, fireworks were accompanied by a relatively noise-less drone show that featured a number of national symbols and imagery. In San Fernando, the typical 20-minute display was this year cut in half.
