A 23-year-old Venezue­lan woman who ini­tial­ly told po­lice she found a new­born aban­doned in a card­board box in South Oropouche has since ad­mit­ted she is the ba­by’s moth­er. She is as­sist­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tors but is not in cus­tody, and po­lice have not ruled out charges. Of­fi­cers said she con­cealed the birth and filed a false re­port.

The in­fant, dis­charged from hos­pi­tal last Fri­day, is now un­der the care of the Child Pro­tec­tion Unit of the Chil­dren’s Au­thor­i­ty.
