Trump recognises Venezuela’s anti-drug cooperation

WASHINGTON, United States (AFP) — The United States (US) on Wednesday gave Venezuela a positive assessment of its cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking, even as the country remains on a US list of major drug-producing or transit countries, which includes Jamaica.

“Given the positive steps taken under interim President Delcy Rodriguez, I have determined Venezuela should no longer be designated as having failed demonstrably to fulfil its drug control commitments,” President Donald Trump said in a statement released by the State Department.

Venezuela is among more than 20 countries on the US list of major drug-producing or transit countries, which includes Afghanistan, the Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Burma, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama and Peru.
