COUVA residents and workers have welcomed the Government’s proposal to grant the Central Trinidad community borough status, saying it could spur development, strengthen local representation and bring public services closer to residents.
However, some questioned what practical benefits the change would bring.
The Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was passed in the House of Representatives on Wednesday by 27 votes to 11, with no abstentions. The legislation proposes creating boroughs in Couva, Barataria, St Augustine and Sangre Grande, while elevating Chaguanas to city status.
