West Portland:Another group of Haitians were picked up by the police on the property of the College of Agriculture Science and Education (CASE) at Passley Gardens, Eastern Portland, Monday afternoon.They are believed to be from a larger group who landed shortly after midnight off the coast of Snow Hill and Passley Gardens early Monday morning.This now brings the number of Haitians boat people captured between Monday morning and Monday afternoon to 27, up from 16.In the first incident, a group comprising 10 adult males, four adult females, and two children were picked up by the police on a beach in the Snow Hill-Passley Gardens area and transported to the Port Antonio police station, where they underwent screening and medical check-ups.However late Monday afternoon the police, acting on intelligence, picked up an additional 11 Haitian males on the property of CASE.A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said one of the Haitians claimed they were fleeing hardships, political unrest, persecution, gang warfare, and hunger in a country where only the ruthless are thriving.
